Pleated vs Flat Velvet Napoli: Which Drape Finish for Your WENTEX FOH Kit

— Buyer’s Guide

Same fabric.
Same flame rating.
Very different look on camera.

When you spec a WENTEX FOH kit — the same versatile drape system that dresses up your AV control area and also configures as a camera surround for broadcast — the most common question we get isn’t about price, lead time, or hardware. It’s about finish: pleated or flat? Both options use the same 260 g/m² Velvet Napoli — same IFR rating, same color, same warranty. The difference is in how the drape reads to the patrons sitting next to your FOH, and how it behaves on camera when you’re broadcasting.

This guide explains the practical difference, which sizes ship in each finish, and how to pick the right one for your venue and production type.

TL;DR: Flat is the standard touring + budget-conscious choice. Pleated is the premium broadcast + corporate + megachurch choice. If your FOH sits in audience view at premium events — or your camera frames it regularly — spec pleated. If the FOH is tucked behind a column or out of camera view — flat is fine.

The fabric is identical

Before the comparison, what doesn’t change: both pleated and flat panels are cut from the same Velvet Napoli — 100% PES (polyester), 260 g/m², inherently flame retardant, certified to NFPA 701 (US) and CAN/ULC-S109 (Canada). Same black color, same flame certificates, same warranty. The hardware is identical. The flight case is identical. The total drape coverage and assembly process are identical.

The only difference is how the drape panel is sewn at the top: flat hangs straight from the support, with no folds. Pleated is sewn with vertical pleats every 4–6 inches, creating a folded, dimensional surface.

When to spec flat

Touring rental house inventory. If kits are going to corporate events, weddings, conferences, and the occasional broadcast, flat is the practical default. It looks clean, ships easily, costs less per unit, and is what most clients expect.

FOH tucked out of sight. When the FOH is positioned where the audience doesn’t look directly at it — balcony, side wall, behind a column — the drape only needs to do its functional job: dress up the area for the crew working inside it. Flat handles that perfectly.

Single-camera shoots. If your broadcast cuts the FOH out of frame (typical for a wide stage shot focused on a presenter), pleated’s premium finish goes unseen. Flat looks identical in those shots.

Budget-conscious specs. The ~$220 difference per kit adds up across a 6-kit fleet. If pleated isn’t adding visible value, flat is the right answer.

When to spec pleated

Multi-camera broadcast. If your show has cameras at the audience seats, on a wide jib, or behind the FOH cutting back to the stage, the camera will frame the drape repeatedly. Pleated reads professional; flat can read like a temporary booth.

Megachurch broadcast. Sunday morning live-stream is broadcast television in everything but name. The FOH platform is in audience view, lit from multiple angles, framed by jib cameras. Pleated Velvet Napoli is the standard for this market.

Corporate keynotes. When the brand cares about how its event looks on social media, pleated is the right call. The audience phone cameras will pick up the difference.

Heavy LED lighting environments. Modern concert and corporate productions use LED washes that throw light at unusual angles. Flat drape can pick up specular reflections; pleated breaks the light up before it can bounce.

Premium theatrical productions. If you’re comparing your production against Broadway, off-Broadway, or major regional theatre, audiences expect the masking to read as set-grade. Pleated reads as theatrical; flat reads as event-style.

How the WENTEX sizes pair with finish

A

Flat Finish Sizes

Available in two configurations:

  • 4′ × 9′ Flat — smallest footprint, compact AV booths
  • 6′ × 9′ Flat — standard FOH height, touring default

If you need a non-standard pairing — for example, 6′ × 9′ Pleated, or 4′ × 11′ Flat — that’s available as a custom order with a 4–6 week lead time. Request a custom quote for non-standard configurations.

The default we recommend

For a buyer who isn’t sure, we recommend 6′ × 11′ Pleated. It covers the widest range of applications, looks premium under any camera, and if the audience or client ends up filming with phones, the pleats hold up. The ~$365 step up from 6′ × 9′ Flat is the cheapest visual upgrade in the FOH category.
