What is duvetyne?

Duvetyne is a brushed cotton fabric originally developed for theatrical masking. Its surface is napped, giving it a velvety matte texture that absorbs light without producing visible reflections. Unlike velour, it’s lightweight and easy to cut, drape, hang, and tear down. Unlike most synthetic blackout fabrics, it’s breathable and flame-retardant by treatment.

In the live-event and AV world it goes by several names: duvetyne, commando cloth, flanel, deko molton, and stage black. They’re all the same family of fabric, with variations in weight, finish, and how many sides are brushed.

What duvetyne is used for

  • Stage finishing and masking — non-reflective matte surface that disappears under stage lighting, used to mask wings, the proscenium border, and offstage areas
  • Trade-show booth backdrops — clean black or white backgrounds that don’t compete with branding, signage, or display lighting
  • Truss and rigging upholstery — soft, snag-resistant wrap for visible truss elements in concert, tour, and corporate event installs
  • Camera and AV masking — cuts spill light, hides equipment racks, and creates clean compositions for video and photography
  • Light flags and gobos — cuts or shapes light from fixtures without burning, ideal for live event lighting design
  • Theater and studio setups — backdrop, leg, and border masking; sound dampening; controlled studio environments
  • Stage skirting — clean draped finish for risers, stages, and platforms
  • Scenic construction — cuts cleanly, drapes well, and works as scenic facing or temporary event walls
  • Houses of worship — backdrop and blackout for production-style services

What ECO Duvetyne is — and what it isn’t

We believe in straight-up product positioning. Our ECO Duvetyne is a 140 g/m² lightweight stage flannel, one-side brushed, certified to NFPA 701 (USA), CAN/ULC-S109 (Canada), and European fire standards. That makes it the right tool for a specific set of jobs:

Great for:

  • Trade show booth backdrops (10×10 to 20×20, flat or pleated)
  • AV control area and rack masking
  • Stage skirting, leg drapes, and softening hard scenery
  • Light flags and gobo cuts on event lighting rigs
  • Truss upholstery on tour, concert, and corporate stages
  • Houses of worship and conference room backdrops
  • Cost-conscious large-quantity projects where weight (and price) matters

Not the right choice for:

  • Full studio-grade blackout (film/photo dark zones) — you want a heavier grade
  • Permanent theatrical legs and borders where lift weight isn’t a concern
  • Top-spec rental house masking where double-brushed appearance is the spec

Need a heavier grade for full blackout or premium theatrical applications? We can source specialty weights on request — contact us with your spec and we’ll quote it.

What one 65-yard roll covers

Every ECO Duvetyne roll is a full 65 yards at 51" wide — enough to cover a lot of ground, which is why we sell by the roll. Approximate coverage for common applications (flat unless noted):

Application Approx. yardage (51" wide) Per 65-yd roll

Duvetyne vs commando cloth: what’s the difference?

The short answer: they’re the same family of fabric, sold under different names in different markets. Commando cloth is the term used in film and photo / studio rental houses (popularized by Rosco and Modern Studio Equipment); duvetyne is the term used in theatrical and event production. Both are brushed cotton, matte black or white, FR-treated.

Functionally, what matters is the weight grade, the brushing spec (one or both sides), and the fire certifications. Trade name is just marketing.

Flame retardancy & certifications

Our ECO Duvetyne is independently flame-retardant certified for North America and Europe, current for 2026:

  • NFPA 701 — the U.S. standard for flame propagation of textiles, required by most American venues and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs)
  • CAN/ULC-S109 — Canada’s flame-test standard for flame-resistant fabrics
  • DIN 4102 B1 — Germany’s flame-retardancy classification for building materials
  • M1 — France’s reaction-to-fire classification (highest non-flammable rating short of A1)
  • EN 13501-1 — the European Union’s harmonized fire-classification standard

These are real, currently-valid certifications. With direct U.S. (NFPA 701) and Canadian (CAN/ULC-S109) certification, ECO Duvetyne meets venue and AHJ documentation requirements across North America. A Certificate of Flame Resistance is available on request — contact us for procurement or venue compliance.

Note: the FR treatment is washing-sensitive — spot clean only.

Frequently asked questions

Is your ECO Duvetyne flame retardant?

Yes. Independently certified to NFPA 701 (USA) and CAN/ULC-S109 (Canada), plus European standards DIN 4102 B1 (Germany), M1 (France), and EN 13501-1 (EU) — current 2026. The FR treatment is not permanent under washing — we recommend spot cleaning only. A Certificate of Flame Resistance is available on request for venue compliance.

What’s the difference between duvetyne, commando cloth, flanel, and stage black?

These are all the same family of brushed cotton FR-treated stage fabric. Duvetyne is the theatrical name, commando cloth is the film/photo name, flanel is the European/Dutch name, and stage black is a generic descriptor. Functionally equivalent at the same weight grade and brushing spec.

What weight is your ECO Duvetyne?

140 g/m². This is a lightweight grade ideal for trade show backdrops, AV masking, stage skirting, truss upholstery, and theater / studio use where weight and price matter. Heavier grades for full blackout or studio applications are available by special order — contact us for a quote.

Is your fabric brushed on one side or both?

One side. ECO Duvetyne is our standard / cost-effective grade. Two-sided brushed premium grades give a deeper matte appearance from both front and back, but at a meaningfully higher price — we can source these on request if your project requires it.

Do you sell ECO Duvetyne by the roll or by the yard?

We sell ECO Duvetyne by the full 65-yard roll — a single roll covers most installs several times over (see the coverage table above), and roll pricing keeps your cost per yard low. For large multi-roll programs or special specs, request a dealer quote.

Do you ship to Canada?

Yes. We regularly ship ECO Duvetyne and the rest of our fabric line into Canada. Lead times depend on shipping mode and Canadian customs — typically 5–10 business days for cross-border LTL freight.

Can ECO Duvetyne be washed?

We do not recommend it. Washing degrades the FR treatment. Spot clean only with a damp cloth and mild detergent if needed.

What’s the lead time?

Stocked colors (black and white) ship same-day on parcel orders placed by 2 PM ET, next business day on LTL freight orders. Large multi-roll bulk orders ship from 3–10 business days depending on scope.

Do you offer bulk or wholesale pricing?

Yes. Bulk discounts apply automatically at checkout: 12–24 rolls 5% off, 25–49 rolls 10% off, 50+ rolls 15% off. For 50+ rolls, pallet quantities, or ongoing dealer pricing, send us a quote request and we’ll get back within one business day.
